Matthew Schwartz, Partner
Matt Schwartz oversees GEM’s day-to-day operations and equity placement and co-investment activities. He has more than 25 years of experience gained as a successful entrepreneur, investor, executive of a national real estate investment services firm, and partner of a large corporate law firm. During this time he has developed long-standing relationships with private and institutional investors and has gained deep experience with a broad range of transaction types and structures of all complexities.
Matt originally launched GEM as the equity investment and services subsidiary of Greysteel Company, a company Matt founded in 2011 and of which he was CEO until 2017 when he spun-off GEM as an independent company and joined forces with Andrew Weiss.
Prior to founding Greysteel, Matt was a senior executive and general counsel of a national real estate investment services firm, which he joined after representing the company as outside counsel as a partner of a large law firm. Matt’s professional and personal experience give him unique insight and perspective into evaluating opportunities, assessing and managing risk, and anticipating challenges.

Founder and CEO, Greysteel Company and Greysteel Holdings, a real estate investment brokerage and services firm. During his tenure, the company expanded to six offices, nationally, before GEM (formerly Greysteel Equity Market) was spun-off into an independent company.

Senior executive and general counsel, Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services Inc. where he represented the firm and its finance subsidiaries on a broad range of corporate, real estate and finance transactions, was a member of the firm’s M&A committee, co-founded the firm’s Special Assets Services Division, and organized and led an industry coalition in a successful legal and legislative challenge to protectionist state laws and regulations inhibiting interstate and multistate real estate investment transactions.

Equity partner, Thompson Coburn LLP, where he was resident in the firm’s Washington, DC office and represented and advised family offices, ultra-high net worth individuals, and privately held and publically traded companies in connection with a broad range of corporate and real estate transactions, finance, and regulatory matters, as well as business disputes.
Matt received his B.A., with honors, from Clark University, and his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, where he served on the editorial board of the school’s Journal of International Law.
Matt and his wife Andrea LaRue live in Bethesda, Maryland with their two daughters, Lucy and Sarah. He is an avid skier and loves golf and yoga.
